Hitachi Water Management Systems in Dubai

Information and Control Systems > Water Management Systems

The booming desert metropolis, Dubai, had a water problem.

Its growing population put a strain on its fragile water supply and sewage plant. Tankers were needed to ship water to treatment facilities that were miles away, clogging Dubai’s ports and waterways.

Hitachi Water Management Systems was brought in to help find a solution using its cutting-edge IT technology. Now, we help support the water supply system, desalination, and sewage treatment for the people and businesses of Dubai.

Hitachi supplied two different technologies to purify and reuse water for the Dubai project: MBR (membrane bio-reactor) systems and RO (reverse osmosis) technology. Both use membrane technology to produce good quality treated water.

The Hitachi Compact MBR employs a biological treatment in membrane filtration. This compact system is easy to maintain, saves space, and is suitable for small-scale sewage treatment. RO is a process in which water containing salt and other impurities is forced through a membrane to purify it at a molecular level. This results in clean, drinkable water.

This is all part of Hitachi’s new movement to address the various issues related to water. This is the “Intelligent Water” concept. We will use information technology for water information management and simulations, and to investigate issues ranging from the condition of tap water to household and industrial waste. Our mission is to develop water supply and sewage processes that are more efficient and environmentally conscious.
