Hitachi America, Ltd. Awards Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship to Jennifer Lopez of Sleepy Hollow

TARRYTOWN, NY, July 24, 2008 -Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT / TSE: 6501) today announced that Jennifer Lopez of Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., has been named the Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship winner for 2008. The Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship program is awarded to a student at Sleepy Hollow High School who demonstrates academic excellence, involvement in the community, and financial need. Hitachi America Ltd. is located in Tarrytown, New York, adjacent to Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County, N.Y.

The Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship was established in 1986 by Tsuneo Tanaka, former president of Hitachi America, Ltd., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based, Hitachi, Ltd., one of the world’s leading technology companies. The first scholarship was awarded in 1986 and was renamed in 1998 in memory of Mr. Tanaka who served two terms as president of Hitachi America.

“Hitachi America is proud to once again recognize a deserving student at Sleepy Hollow High School with the award of the Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship”, said Masahide Tanigaki, president and CEO of Hitachi America. “Ms. Lopez is truly an outstanding young woman who has demonstrated leadership, academic excellence, and community service. We are honored to present her with the Tsuneo Tanaka Scholarship.”

Ms. Lopez, a senior and member of the National Honor Society, English Language Society and Foreign Language Society, was awarded a 4-year $10,000 scholarship. She will attend Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, this fall. Academically ranked in the top of her class and a 2008 AP Scholar, Ms Lopez is active in her community as a volunteer at Phelps Memorial Hospital, a Tiny Tot Camp Counselor and a “Kids in the Kitchen” volunteer. At Sleepy Hollow High School, she was also president of the Class of 2008, the Latin American Student Organization and Varsity Athletes Against Substance Abuse. She is also the Captain of the Varsity Lacrosse Team, among other school activities.

“I was thrilled to be presented with the scholarship and I am grateful to Hitachi for recognizing my achievements and for providing support to me as I embark on my next academic journey in college,” said Jennifer Lopez.
