Hitachi America Announces The Passing Of Its President Tsuneo Tanaka

Hitachi America, Ltd., today announced that Tsuneo Tanaka, senior executive managing director of Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE: HIT), Tokyo, Japan, and president of Hitachi America, Ltd. died on January 20, in Los Angeles, California after a brief illness. He was 62 and lived in White Plains, New York.

Mr. Tanaka served as president of Hitachi America twice, from 1985 to 1990 and, most recently since June 1996. He spent much of his business career in the globalization of Hitachi, Ltd., including expanding its power and industrial business and electronics business in many parts of the world. Under his North America leadership, Hitachi America experienced strong growth. He also is well known for his 'Americanization Program' within Hitachi America and for his development of Hitachi' community service program in the U.S.

While Mr. Tanaka was president of Hitachi America, he introduced American outside board members to the organization, and hired and developed senior American executives within the company' ranks.

As part of his business philosophy, Mr. Tanaka developed and sustained a very strong commitment to community involvement. During his tenure at Hitachi America, Ltd., Mr. Tanaka oversaw the establishment of the Hitachi Foundation in Washington D.C. and implemented a broad-based, grassroots community service program for employees throughout the company' North America operations. The Hitachi Foundation since 1985 has awarded grants nationally, totaling more than $23 million.

Mr. Tanaka is survived by his wife Miyako, three sons and four grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Tanaka will take place in Tokyo. Contributions in his memory are being made to Saint John' Health Center Foundation in Santa Monica, California.
