Hitachi America, Ltd. Donates Over 5,000 Pounds of Food to The Food Bank For Westchester During Annual Hitachi North America Food Drive

TARRYTOWN, NY (August 11, 2009) – Hitachi America, Ltd. located in Tarrytown, NY, joined forces with Hitachi companies across North America for the 2009 Annual Hitachi North America Food Drive. During the month of July, Hitachi North America companies from Canada to the Gulf Coast focused their corporate citizenship energies on collecting food and raising funds to help alleviate hunger.

Hitachi America, Ltd. employees collected 5089 pounds of food at their Tarrytown headquarters as well as several hundred dollars. The local Tarrytown community also participated in this effort. Food was collected by employees at Allan Block Insurance, the Village Clerk’s office, the Tarrytown Police station, the Chamber of Commerce office and the Warner Library. The Rotary Club of the Tarrytowns also supported the drive by contributing supermarket gift cards.

“This year’s drive is especially important given the tremendous impact the current economic crisis has had on our local communities,” said Kiyoshi Kinugawa, President and CEO, Hitachi America, Ltd. “Local agencies have experienced an increased demand for services from people from all walks of life, many of whom are receiving support for the first time in their lives. Added to that, the summer is always a challenging period for families in need of assistance especially for children, many of which receive reduced or free meals while in school.”

A group of Hitachi employees also performed an afternoon of volunteer community service at the Food Bank For Westchester on August 5 to help sort and unpack the food for distribution to local agencies throughout Westchester County.

The annual food drive is a cooperative effort between the Hitachi Group companies across North America and The Hitachi Foundation. Through its Hitachi Community Action Partnership (HCAP) program, the Hitachi Foundation provides a framework for employee community engagement that is supported by Hitachi group companies and aimed at empowering employees to address specific needs in their local communities.
